Geomatica® GeoComp
Geomatica GeoComp is an automated production system for generation and analysis of geocoded AVHRR, MODIS and IRS images and image composites. GeoComp is capable of quickly generating precision geocoded scenes and (nominally) cloud-free composites of both single scenes and full passes of current and archived data in a variety of formats. GeoComp radiometrically calibrates the imagery to correct for time-varying sensor effects and maintains full radiometric resolution through each processing step.
Whether for compositing or geocoding GeoComp is intended to address the requirement of a range of users from ground-station operators, forest fire management agencies, crop forecasting and assessment agencies, crop insurance companies, forestry industries, global change researchers, national and regional-scale government environmental agencies, and many more! Geomatica GeoComp is currently being used as an automated production systems for continental monitoring of crops, forests, and fire hot spots with minimal user intervention.
Geomatica GeoComp offers:
- Geocoding and processing support for AVHRR, MODIS and IRS imagery
- Image Chip database capabilities using for storage, and automated retrieval of geo-locational information
- Management utility for creating and modifying chips
- Chips can be automatically or manually used for collecting Ground Control Points (GCPs)
- Creation of cloud free image composites (multi-scene, multi-day)
- Fast processing of many scenes and large data sets
- Precision Geocoding producing highly accurate output
- Processes many different product layers to many different industries
- Easy to use Graphical User Interface (GUI)

Who Uses Geomatica Geocomp? And Why?
"The Manitoba Remote Sensing Centre (MRSC) has been involved in processing NOAA data for more than a decade. This expertise contributed to the design and development of the current PCI Geomatics based Geocomp system. The result is an extremely user friendly and efficient geocoding and compositing system."

Monitoring Large Regions of Interest - Solution Example 1
Geomatica GeoComp’s automated compositing capabilities ensure
a clear view of your region of interest
Problem:
Your organization is responsible for monitoring areas with large geographic extents. Low-medium resolution imagery, such as AVHRR, MODIS and IRS, are ideal for your application because of your large regions of interest. Utilizing such imagery poses problems such as:
- Finding software which supports data from the sensors that you use
- Large dataset processing troublesome and time consuming
- Ground Control Point (GCP) collection, for the purposes of imagery geocoding, is a time-consuming, manual effort
- Partial cloud cover in your large areas of interest
|
|
Solution:
Geomatica GeoComp provides all of the tools necessary to process and analyze your imagery effectively and efficiently. GeoComp is designed to work with multiple levels of AVHRR, MODIS and IRS imagery. GeoComp is optimized to work with the large datasets produced by these sensors. Automated geocoding, along with manual override options, ensures that your data is geocoded quickly and accurately. Cloud cover in your imagery can be removed with automated image compositing.

Vegetation Monitoring - Solution Example 2
Automated Generation of Consistent Vegetation
Information
Products
from Geomatica GeoComp
Problem:
As an organization concerned with the quantity and quality of vegetation in your region of interest you rely on imagery to assist in the assessment of current vegetation levels and threats, as well as for visualization and presentation of these assessments. Because of your large study area you rely on low-medium resolution imagery such as AVHRR, MODIS and IRS. Problems and challenges faced in dealing with these images include:
- Finding software which will read raw AVHRR, MODIS and IRS data formats
- Processing the imagery – raw data import, ground control collection, geocoding, subsetting and compositing is time consuming
- Inconsistent (operator dependent) vegetation information products such as NDVI and BRDF
- Identification of threats such as forest fires
- Partial cloud / smoke cover over forests
|
|
Solution:
Geomatica GeoComp is the perfect solution for large-area vegetation monitoring, and is currently being used by several organization in this respect. Automated data input, geocoding and compositing mean less time spent on repetitive tasks and more time spent analyzing information produced by this data. Automatic generation of vegetation information products – such as NDVI, BRDF and Forest Fire Maps – ensures efficient and consistent results.
