PCI Geomatics supports CARTOSAT-1 satellite data

Richmond Hill, Ontario – February 24, 2006: PCI Geomatics® is pleased to announce that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Antrix Corporation Ltd. to develop an interface that integrates CARTOSAT-1 satellite data products in Geomatica®, PCI Geomatics image-centric geospatial software.

Antrix, a corporate arm of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), launched the CARTOSAT-1 satellite on May 5, 2005, to provide stereo data for advanced and large scale mapping applications. CARTOSAT-1, the eleventh satellite in the Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) series, was built by ISRO primarily for cartographic applications. The state-of-the-art satellite carries two panchromatic cameras that take black and white stereoscopic pictures at 2.5m ground resolution of the Earth in the panchromatic region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The cameras are mounted on the satellite to allow for multiple images of one area, thereby allowing for accurate 3-D map creation.

Geomatica support of CARTOSAT-1 data includes both rational functions and rigorous model based orthorectification capabilities through Geomatica® OrthoEngine®. The PCI Geomatics exclusive ‘Toutin Model’ will facilitate the rigorous orthorectification functionality; this model is extremely successful in orthorectifying a wide variety of satellite imagery, including high-resolution data. Best of all, this technology is completely integrated with other powerful tools available in Geomatica, including spatial analysis, image processing, and cartographic capabilities, which allows you to easily extract more information from the CARTOSAT-1 imagery.

CARTOSAT-1 satellite data is extremely useful for a wide range of applications, including wasteland, forest cover, and wetland mapping, as well as natural resource planning, and agriculture and disaster management. The data gathered from this new high-resolution satellite is also an excellent source of information for generating accurate digital elevation models.
