PCI Geomatics GIS technology assists rural road connectivity in India

Richmond Hill, Ontario – July 7, 2006: PCI Geomatics®, a world-leading developer of image-centric software and solutions for the geospatial industry, is assisting rural road connectivity in India through the use of its SPANS GIS technology.

Many poorly-connected rural communities exist within India, and a massive rural roads program was established in 2000 to provide all-weather access to these unconnected terrains. Called GeoApproach (Geomatics-based Application for Planning Rural Road Connectivity to Habitations), this project designed and developed at National Informatics Centre (NIC), Bhopal uses PCI Geomatics spatial analysis software as the underlying GIS database, enabling a faster response to the changing ground realities of development planning.

"The analytical tool used in the development of GeoApproach was SPANS, a highly cost-effective GIS software from PCI Geomatics Canada," says Mr. Vivek Chitale, the Project Leader and Technical Director at NIC, Bhopal.

SPANS was selected for its user-friendly query and analysis capabilities, open-ended design, and high function value. These proven GIS tools are now a part of Geomatica, PCI’s integrated application for remote sensing, GIS, cartography and photogrammetry.

GeoApproach was designed as a low cost Geomatics-based application for rural road planning. Through the program, habitations with a population of over 1000 will be connected with an all-weather road by 2009.
