PCI Geomatics’ Geomatica® and training services help
MAP: GAC with disaster planning

Richmond Hill , Ontario May 3, 2005 : PCI Geomatics’ Geomatica software and training services are helping the Multinational Andean Project: Geoscience for Andean Communities (MAP:GAC) with disaster planning and prediction.

The MAP:GAC project was established to provide people in the Andes with updated and integrated geospatial information on natural hazards like earthquakes, landslides, and volcanoes. Geomatica software will be an integral part of this process.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be a part of the MAP:GAC project,” says John Roos , PCI Geomatics’ sales manager for Latin America . “Our software helps provide MAP:GAC with the tools needed to achieve their mandate.”

“We selected PCI Geomatics because they offer broad functionality, quality results, and they’re reasonably priced,” says Dr. Mark Stasiuk, sub-project leader of geophysical tools and techniques for MAP:GAC. “Their digital elevation models (DEMs) create and communicate information to non-technical land-use experts, which aids in our goal of saving lives otherwise jeopardized by poor practices and/or lack of knowledge.”

Training services provided by PCI Geomatics include automatic DEM extraction, terrain analysis, pansharpening, and orthorectification of air photos and satellite data including, ASTER, QuickBird, and EROS. Training also allows users to  monitor and analyze a larger area of land than would otherwise be possible with ground surveys.

“We have found the training from PCI Geomatics to be practical, applicable to our project, and very convenient,” says Malaika Ulmi, a scientific support officer for MAP:GAC. “We have increased our investment in Geomatica licenses in-part because PCI Geomatics offers training in Spanish, and because their technical support has been great.”
