  • Greetings!

Spring has sprung, bringing not only warmer temperatures, but also an eventful season at PCI Geomatics!

We hope you dropped by our booth at the GITA Annual Conference in San Antonio in March or saw us at the Oracle User Conference; or perhaps you visited us at GeoForm in Moscow, or Map Middle East in Dubai.

PCI also hosted a successful workshop, "Practical Radar Polarimetry Theory and Applications" at our Richmond Hill headquarters. This popular event was in cooperation with MDA Geospatial Services, CCRS and sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency. Stay tuned for additional workshops to be announced at PCI's Gatineau location.

Our online discussion forum is a buzz with activity! Sign up today and stay connected with people from all over the world exchanging ideas and tips on how to accomplish your tasks - it's absolutely free!

    PCI is NITF Certified

PCI Geomatics is pleased to announce it is the first non-American organization to achieve certification for the National Imagery Transmission Format Standard (NITFS). Level 2.0 and 2.1 NITFS support has been added to our Generic Database (GDB) technology.

The NITFS is a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Federal Intelligence Community suite of standards and specifications developed to provide a foundation for interoperability in the exchange, storage, and transmission of digital-imagery and imagery associated data. This standard is mandated in the DoD for imagery product dissemination.

GDB technology can directly read and write raster, vector, and other information from an extensive list of supported file formats. GDB technology has been integrated into the Geomatica Focus, Modeler, Orthoengine environments, as well as the software development environment (ProSDK).

The certified NITF support is an add-on license to Geomatica and GDB software component in the ProSDK. For further compliancy details and descriptions on NITFS , click level 2.0 & 2.1 .

    Tips and Tricks

Did you know that Geomatica 10 offers users the capability to smooth vectors? Typically, any vector which is generated from raster data tends to follow the pixels in the raster. The resulting vector will generally appear jagged and quite angular. Most users generally wish to have vector lines appear more aesthetically pleasing and smooth.

Fortunately, Geomatica 10 provides specialized smoothing algorithms which slightly alter the position of points which make up a line so as to improve the appearance of the line. These smoothing algorithms are located in Algorithm Librarian | All Vector Algorithms, and are denoted SMBOYLE, SMCHAIKEN, SMMCMASTER.

An example where smoothing vectors created from raster data is useful is in the generation of contours from raster imagery. When creating contour lines from a raster image, the resulting contours often look jagged and lack aesthetic appeal. By apply one of Geomatica 10's smoothing algorithms to your generated contours, your resulting contours will appear much more aesthetically pleasing. You can find an example of applying smoothing algorithms to contour lines in the following modeler example found here, which utilizes the SMCHAIKEN algorithm.
