Dr. Athanassios Ganas
Remote sensing and geology researcher at National Observatory of Athens

Dr Athanassios Ganas was born in Trikala, Greece in 1963. He holds a BSc degree in Geology from the National University of Athens (1986), an MSc in Structural Geology from Carleton University, Ottawa (1990) and a PhD in Geological Remote Sensing from the University of Reading, UK (1997). He is a Principal Investigator for the European Space Agency (ESA) - ERS and ENVISAT missions. He has published in major international journals (Natural Hazards, Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, Journal of Geophysical Research, International Journal of Remote Sensing). In 1998 he received the Ktenas Prize from the Academy of Athens. Since 2000 he has joined the Geodynamics Institute at the National Observatory of Athens. His primary research interests are in Digital Geomorphometry, SAR Interferometry, The Geology of Earthquakes, Thermal and Hyperspectral Remote Sensing. Part of his work at the Institute includes the preparation of digital maps and imagery for earthquake disaster management.

Marc van de Ven
Head of Department of Real Estate Management and Geo-Information for regional government of Gelderland, Holland

Marc van de Ven has extensive experience in land surveying and developing geo-information systems for private companies (geo-engineering), municipalities, and water boards, among others in the province of Gelderland in Holland. He has also provided support and advice for governmental bodies in Slovenia, Czech Republic and Isle of Aruba on environmental, topographic and cadastral issues. Marc is experienced in management information and is also a Working Group member for several national developments initiated by Ravi (geo- base datasets, geo-information systems, process analysis).
He is currently the Head of Department of Real Estate Management and Geo-information for the regional government, province of Gelderland, in Holland. His responsibilities include expertise on data quality and meta-data for issues related to geo-information and real estate industry within the organization of the regional government of Gelderland. He also provides support and advice on information distribution (Internet) and open information systems.

Marc is a Working Group member for redesign, development (migration) and implementation of Spatial Information Infrastructure in Gelderland (data, IT, software and knowledge). He is also a member of advisory board on disaster management, serving as data quality specialist, and has been a project team member on environmental (industrial) risk assessment.

Steve Winston
County Emergency Planning Manager, Cornwall County Council B

Steve Winston is the County Emergency Planning Manager for Cornwall. His interest is in developing Geographical information systems linked to spatial databases used for managing wide area emergencies.

His experience of emergencies includes - The Penzance /Paddington night train fire at Taunton, the Riyadh airport Tristar mid-air fire, widespread flooding events, several large scale shipping incidents involving pollution (CITA, Rosebay, MV Willy, Kodima, Toledo) and a number of incidents requiring evacuation of the public.

He is a member of the UK Government Cabinet Office Working Party looking at interactive hazard modelling.
