<H4>Descriptors And History</H4>
Each layer in a GeoGateway database can have a description string and 
a series of history records. The description string is one line, with at
most 80 characters. Many formats cannot support this, in which 
case, attempts to modify the description have no effect, and the descriptor
string is generated synthetically (e.g., ``Vector layer %d''). <p>
Likewise, each layer can have a list of history records indicating operations
that have occurred to the data. Well behaved GeoGateway applications will 
write a new record of history information when a data layer is updated.
