New PCI Geomatics Functionality Reduces Costs by Processing Landsat 7 Level 0R Data
The latest addition to the growing list of new features being developed for
PCI Geomatics software is a new functionality that will help Geomatica customers reduce the cost of using Landsat 7 data. By purchasing and processing raw Landsat 7 Level 0R imagery, users can save approximately US$125 per scene in imagery costs (http://landsat7.usgs.gov/), representing a significant cost reduction while producing excellent image correction results.
For projects that require the use of a large number of Landsat 7 images, the savings in production costs will be realized immediately.

PCI Geomatics functions are able to read raw Level 0R imagery in the distributed HDF-EOS format. Full radiometric corrections and Level 1 geometric corrections are then applied. All data required for the corrections are extracted from the HDF files, but an external Calibration Parameter File (CPF) may also be used. The high quality output data (Level 1G) are produced in a simple HDF-EOS format, using a standard map projection or, alternatively, using the satellite track projection. The latter is used for further processing in PCI Geomatics? photogrammetry software, OrthoEngine.

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) will verify that the new software code properly processes Level 0 images generated by the Canadian facility, which is operated by RADARSAT and MDA.  Data supplied by the USGS EROS Data Center (EDC) were also tested.

Follow this link, http://www.pcigeomatics.com/news/Landsat70R.html, to our web site for more details. Visit www.pcigeomatics.com  regularly for updates on this and other development news at PCI Geomatics!

PCI acknowledges the assistance of the CCRS in porting the software to the Microsoft Windows platform.

Geomatica OrthoEngine now Supports ASTER ortho and
DEM creation
DEM extraction is the process whereby imagery is exploited for 3D points that characterize a terrain surface.  The resulting DEM can be directly applied in your GIS or mapping applications such as:  3D Fly-throughs, mission planning, perspective scene viewing and analysis, drainage and watershed analysis, contour generation, slope and aspect calculation, shaded relief analysis, intervisibility analysis, and of course, orthorectification of imagery.

Geomatica OrthoEngine accomplishes automatic DEM extraction by using automatic stereoscopic digital image correlation algorithms that measure and calculate elevation for stereo airphotos, digital camera frames, ASTER, IKONOS, IRS, SPOT and RADARSAT imagery.  DEMs can also be created semi-automatically from stereo images, using Elevation Match Points, GCPs, and Tie Points.  OrthoEngine includes flexible tools for importing, merging, and interpolating DEMs from any GDB-supported raster or vector format.  OrthoEngine also offers a full set of tools for editing DEM data.

For more information on PCI Geomatics' "OrthoEngine Automatic DEM" add-on package please visit: http://www.pcigeomatics.com/product_ind/orthoengine/packages.html or contact:  info@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

PCI Geomatics Announces three new training courses with
the release of Geomatica
!

Introduction to Geomatica

"Introduction to Geomatica" is the foundational course for Geomatica training.  This course covers the PCI data model and introduces you to the main Geomatica components.  Special emphasis is placed on helping users to become familiar with Geomatica's new viewing environment.  (Three days)

EASI/PACE to Geomatica

For existing customers, the new EASI/PACE to Geomatica course shows you how to make the transition from EASI/PACE and ImageWorks to Geomatica. Detailed instruction is provided on how to move from the old "single file" paradigm to Geomatica's new "project" paradigm. This course also offers several exercises that showcase the new viewing environment. (One day)

OrthoEngine Basics

The new OrthoEngine course covers the core orthorectification technology contained in the Geomatica OrthoEngine module. Basic instruction on how to process both air photo and satellite data is also included.  (Two days)

For customers who require more in-depth training on any OrthoEngine topics, PCI recommends scheduling an extra day of private project consulting to ensure that you receive the specific training that you need to confidently complete your OrthoEngine projects.

Showcase of the month....

Customer Name:
  i-cubed                                     Location:  U.S.A.

Geomatic Interests: Photogrammety, Remote Sensing

Task:  PRE-PROCESSING FOR INSTANT IMAGERY? USA MOSAIC

Background

  • In a teaming arrangement with EarthWatch Inc., i-cubed announced the completion of the Instant Imagery USA Mosaic, the first seamless color satellite image mosaic of the continental United States produced at 15-meter spatial resolution
  • USA mosaic is composed of approximately 450 individual Landsat 7 satellite scenes
  • Before digitally stitching these together, the image data must undergo a series of rigorous photogrammetric pre-processing stages, including image correction, orthorectification, ground control point collection, and tie point collection.

PCI Geomatics Involvement

The creation of the image map was a complex process that included sophisticated geometric correction and radiometric balancing. ?We never would have undertaken a project of this magnitude if not for the cost effective automation and flexibility that PCI software offers,? said i-cube?s president Russ Cowart. Long-term users of PCI Geomatics software, i-cubed prepared to push the limits of industry proven products such as EASI/PACE® and OrthoEngine® while also sharing data with a variety of other software packages being used to achieve their development objectives.

Preparing the Landsat data prior to mosaicking gave i-cubed the opportunity to take advantage of other helpful PCI Geomatics software features. Seeking greater control over their tasks, i-cubed resourcefully used a blend of PCI algorithms while also internally developing EASI® scripts for their mosaicking and other processing purposes, thus taking advantage of PCI?s customization capabilities for their own requirements. i-cubed was also free to make use of PCI Geomatics? automated functions such as batch processing, auto-scheduling, and other easily programmable/customizable functions that simplify tasks.

Software Solution: EASI/PACE, OrthoEngine, GCPWorks, ImageWorks

i-cubed can now use Geomatica software solutions to handle all these tasks and more!
