PCI Geomatics Software and Satellite Imagery May Provide New Insight Into
Walkerton E. coli Outbreak
Richmond Hill, Ontario - June 29, 2000: PCI Geomatics has provided image
analysis software and software expertise to the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources to assist the Walkerton Information Response Team with the
Walkerton Environmental Study. This team of resource specialists from across
the provincial government has been assembled to study what has been called
the worst E. coli outbreak in Canadian history in the area around Walkerton
in southwestern Ontario, Canada. The PCI Geomatics contribution fills "an
immediate requirement for the quick processing, orthorectifying, and
analysis of a large volume of image data."
"Our software will be used to quickly process and study months of detailed
satellite, airphoto, and ground data collected for the Walkerton region in
order to assist in the assessment of the current situation and perhaps
determine how this problem evolved."
Arnold Hougham, U.S./Canada Sales Director, PCI Geomatics.
PCI Geomatics software will assist the Walkerton Information Response Team
in a variety of ways. The technology being provided will allow scientists to
correct their satellite data for improved accuracy, detect and map changes,
use data from GIS databases, and is capable of sharing data from over 80
spatial data formats. The software solutions provided will be used
immediately to identify, classify, and assess the terrain, slope, drainage,
vegetation, land use, water bodies, and man-made objects detected by
satellites and aircraft for the areas in and around the town of Walkerton.
Presently, resource specialists are compiling all relevant data sets.
Over a dozen people are reported to have died from drinking
E. coli-contaminated tap water in Walkerton. Thousands more have suffered
diarrhea, nausea and stomach cramps. The recent E. coli situation in
southwestern Ontario is just the latest of thousands of similar outbreaks
around the world every year that affect millions of people. Underdeveloped
countries that lack strict public health standards are most at risk;
however, developed nations around the world are not immune.
For its proactive assistance, PCI Geomatics has been officially commended by
the Ontario Ministry of Resources. In particular, Arnold Hougham and Jeff
Chamberlain were singled out for their "immediate and unhesitating response"
to their needs for additional geomatics software.
"PCI Geomatics shares the Provinces concern and hopes that the tools we have
provided will serve in some way to mitigate the situation."
Terry Moloney, Vice-President of Operations, PCI Geomatics.
The software developed by PCI Geomatics is state of the art, and can be used
on a desktop system, or, if needed, may be taken out in the field using a
portable laptop computer. PCI Geomatics software can work with all
commercial satellite data types, including radar, infrared, and
multi-spectral imagery, including the new high resolution IKONOS imagery
from Space Imaging(tm), Inc. All this technology will be used to help assess
the situation and hopefully will contribute to its resolution.
"Medical geography became formally recognized with a similar case in London,
England, in 1854 when Dr. John Snow became the first person to use mapping
as a tool to investigate a perplexing cholera epidemic. I imagine that Dr.
Snow would indeed be very impressed with the geomatics tools available for
such analysis today."
Robert Moses, M.D., President and CEO, PCI Geomatics.
PCI Geomatics is currently developing the next generation of geomatics
software. GEOMATICA(tm), a product to be released later this year, is a
complete geomatics solution providing affordable geospatial software that is
feature-rich and easy to use. Essential elements from PCI Geomatics' world
renown products have been assembled into a highly integrated package and
infused with new technologies needed to meet the growing challenges in
remote sensing, spatial analysis, GIS, photogrammetry, and cartography.
PCI Geomatics (www.pcigeomatics.com) is a world leading developer of
